ADHD therapy · Chicago, Evanston & online ADHD therapy for students and young adults

Structure that worked in high school often does not survive college. Deadlines only feel real at the last hour, focus arrives too late, and years of being told you were not trying start to sound true. Therapy helps with the practical side and with what ADHD has done to how you see yourself.

If you are in crisis right now, call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency department. This page is about ongoing therapy.

What it can look like

  • Five things started, none finished
  • Deadlines only real at the last hour
  • Losing the thread mid-lecture
  • Time going missing
  • Called lazy while trying hard
  • Focus arriving too late

Where therapy fits in ADHD care

The National Institute of Mental Health lists the standard treatments for ADHD as medication and psychosocial interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy. They do different jobs. Medication, where it is used, is prescribed by a psychiatrist or physician; Mindtude does not prescribe. Therapy works on what medication does not: the systems, habits and patterns around attention, and the stress, avoidance and self-criticism that build up after years of struggling with it.

ADHD and the college schedule

College removes much of the outside structure that made ADHD manageable before: fixed bells, daily homework checks, someone noticing when work goes missing. In its place come long reading lists, assignments due weeks away, and unstructured research time. For many students that is when ADHD, diagnosed or not, starts costing more than it used to.

Therapy works with that reality rather than against it. That can mean building external structure (body-doubling, fixed work blocks, deadlines broken into earlier private ones), planning around your best hours of focus, and setting up the week so a bad day does not undo it.

What the work looks like

The work is practical. Together you build routines for planning, starting and finishing that fit how your attention actually works, not how a productivity guide says it should. Large assignments get broken into pieces small enough to begin before a deadline forces it. You also look at what happens emotionally around a missed deadline, because shame and avoidance are often what turn a slow start into a lost week.

Sessions are specific. You bring the week as it actually went, the task you kept avoiding, the deadline that slipped, and work out what got in the way and what to try next. Many students with ADHD also deal with anxiety or low mood, partly because constantly catching up is exhausting. That is part of the work too, rather than a separate referral.

If you are not sure it is ADHD

You do not need a formal diagnosis to start. Some people come in already diagnosed; others are wondering whether ADHD explains a pattern they have noticed for years. Therapy can help you make sense of that and decide whether a formal evaluation is worth pursuing.

How we work with it

  • Systems built for how your attention actually works, not how it is supposed to
  • Breaking work into pieces small enough to start without a deadline behind you
  • Separating ADHD from the years of being told you were not trying

Common questions

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?

No. Mindtude provides therapy. If medication is part of your care, it comes from a psychiatrist or physician, and therapy works alongside it.

Can therapy help if I already take ADHD medication?

Yes. Medication can make focus easier to reach; therapy helps with what you do with it: planning, starting, follow-through and the stress around them.

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to start?

No. You can start with what you have been noticing. Therapy can help you decide whether a formal evaluation makes sense.

Do I need to be a student to get ADHD therapy here?

No. The practice mainly works with college students and young adults, including people early in their careers.

Is ADHD therapy available online?

Yes, by secure video anywhere in Illinois, or in person in Evanston, Chicago or Palatine.
